The roots of chiropractic have their origins in ancient medicine. Egypt, Greece, and Rome all thought that life came from a special force that didn't exist in nonliving things. This believe persisted throughout the Middle Ages and became known as vitalism. Carl Reichenbach tried to study this vital energy in a scientific manner. He called it the Odic Force. It was never confirmed scientifically, but it would serve as the philosophical basis for chiropractic.

The practical treatments offered by chiropractors have their origins in the ancient practice of bonesetting. These practitioners were known for their ability to force broken bones and dislocated joints back into place. Some of them even became famous, such as Sally Mapp from England. She was notorious for pushing bones back into places with skill and strength equal to any man. However, by around 1815 medical science began to push out folk remedies. Bonesetters are mostly extinct in the west today, though they can still be found in the developing world.

Daniel David Palmer was the person who would combine vitalism and bonesetting to create the field of chiropractic. He started by using magnetic treatments in 1895. Daniel believed that aligning the vital life forces would help fix many illnesses. In 1896, he concluded that most illnesses were do to misalignments of the spine as well as imbalance of the vital energies. This could be corrected by manipulating the joints. In 1897 he opened the Palmer College of Chiropractic and began teaching students.

Daniel was sent to prison in 1906 for practicing without a license. However, his son B.J. Palmer bought the college. The two disagreed on the future of chiropractic, but that was resolved when Daniel died in 1913. B.J. was then able to get laws passed in most states that allowed chiropractors to be licensed separately from medical doctors. After that, he spread his knowledge all over the world.

The American Medical Association tried to eliminate the practice of chiropractic in 1963. However, in 1976 chiropractors sued the AMA and claimed doctors were violating the Sherman Antitrust act. The court agreed, and thus chiropractic is here to stay. However, most doctors today still think that the treatments are dangerous. The World Health Organization claims it's safe if done skillfully. Whatever the opinions might be, chiropractic treatments have produced side effects that killed.

In 2014 thirty year old Jeremy Youngblood walked into his chiropractor's office to treat back pain. After his neck was manipulated he died of a brain hemorrhage. Katie May was a former Playboy model. In 2016 she received joint manipulation treatment and had a stroke. John Lawler lived in the UK and was eighty years old in 2017. His chiropractor damaged John's spine and paralyzed him. Then he died in the hospital a few days later. His chiropractor is still treating patients.

What do you think about the practice of chiropractic? Is it valid alternative medicine of simply fraud? Let us know what you think.
