2016年11月の公開以降、口コミやSNSでの評判によって公開規模を広げ、史上最長となる異例のロングランヒットを記録、累計動員210万人、興行収入27億円を突破したアニメーション映画『この世界の片隅に』。そして『この世界の片隅に』に新たなシーンを追加した長尺版のアニメーション映画『この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に』（2019）に続く新作が国内外より待ち望まれていた片渕須直監督の最新作が遂に始動！

死んだら人はどこへ行ってしまうのだろうか。消えてしまうのだろうか。
京都で死者数万人、死体は山に置かれ、町の外には野犬が蔓延る一。

Sunao Katabuchi, who won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Annecy International Animation Film Festival for "In This Corner of the World" (2016), and is currently in the production of an animated film "The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black", it describes the period of the classical Japanese essay literature " The Pillow Book".

The film follows Kyoto during the Heian period(the 10th century) in Japan.
Tens of thousands dead, gutters filled with corpses, children abandoned in the mountains, and groups of wild dogs vigilantly watching outside the city.

The elegant image of the Heian period has been shown in many literary and artistic works. However, Katabuchi's new work takes us back to Kyoto a thousand years ago, when the city was shrouded in darkness due to repeated epidemics of plague.
