The level of financial support you can get will depend on a financial assessment and a care assessment. Care is generally means tested. The means test will work out how much you might need to contribute yourself.

It might be helpful to know that if your capital, income or savings total more than £23,250 then, generally speaking, you will not be eligible for financial support. With home care, the financial assessment does not include the value of your house as you need to live there to receive the care.

Even if you have for than £23,250 you may still be entitled to certain financial benefits such as Attendance Allowance, PIP or a Carer’s Allowance that are not means tested.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is for people who are over the state pension age and who, due to an illness or disability – need extra help at home.

What is a PIP?

PIP stands for Personal Independence Payment. PIPs cover people who are under the state pension age who need extra help because of a medical condition or disability.

Finally, what is Carer’s Allowance?

The Carer’s Allowance is a weekly allowance that those friends or family members who are caring for you might be able to claim.
