This is not my story directly, but it may as well be. This holiday season was going along well, but a little 14-year-old girl was complaining about the pain in her shoulder. It kept persisting, and it warranted a visit to the doctor. As any parent may worry about their child, they never expect to hear what was said that day. That their little girl had cancer, and bone cancer to be more specific. This was two weeks ago, and how the world has changed since Christmas. Since that moment of finding out this devastating news, the family has had to make a series of changes, one of those being FMLA. As many know, FMLA is wonderful when it comes to protecting the jobs of people who have to care for others, but money and savings dry up quickly when dealing with the fight against this horrible disease.

My friend Kevin is a good man who is having to make easy decisions as to whether he needs to be at work, or with his daughter, taking her to chemo appointments, traveling for specialists, and making sure she is taken care of and comfortable. But he can't do this alone because the cost of these treatments is enough to bankrupt generations of a family. As you can imagine, it is a lot, and in a short period.
