The term “American Indian” originated with the discovery of America by European explorers in 1492, as they were aiming to reach the islands off the coast of India and referred to the Indigenous peoples he encountered as Indios. This label, carried through Spanish, Portuguese, and later English usage, became entrenched during European expansion as a catch-all term for the many distinct nations of North America. By the 18th and 19th centuries, “American Indian” was firmly established in U.S. treaties, federal laws, and agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs. However, it was an outsider-imposed term that grouped together hundreds of culturally diverse peoples. In the 1960s and 1970s the alternative “Native American” was promoted, intended to be both geographically accurate and respectful by emphasizing that these communities are the original inhabitants of the continent. The term gained official and media traction in the 1980s, yet it was not universally embraced; many Indigenous individuals preferred “American Indian” because of its continued legal significance in U.S. law, while others rejected both in favor of their specific tribal nation names. More recently, “Indigenous” has emerged as a broader, globally recognized term, especially in academic and activist circles.

The word “Aboriginal”, from the Latin ab origine (“from the beginning”), entered English in the 17th century to describe the earliest known inhabitants of any region. Historically applied in a general sense, it has since developed strong associations with particular countries. In Australia, “Aboriginal Australians” refers specifically to the Indigenous peoples of mainland Australia and Tasmania, distinct from Torres Strait Islanders. In Canada, “Aboriginal peoples” is a constitutional term encompassing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. While “Aboriginal” and “Indigenous” both refer to original inhabitants, the former is often region-specific and tied to legal frameworks, whereas “Indigenous” functions as a more universal term, including in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Across contexts, these labels carry historical, political, and cultural weight, and many communities continue to prioritize self-identification by their own nation’s name over any umbrella designation.
