This presentation introduces complexity theory as a
methodological approach for understanding complex systems. It explores how complexity thinking shifts research from seeking linear causation to engaging with patterns of interaction, self-organisation, and emergence. Drawing on the Health Research Council–funded project ‘Atawhai’ as a practical example, it illustrates how embracing uncertainty and relational responsiveness can generate richer, more grounded insights into real-world change.​
Dr Elizabeth Eppel is an Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of
Government, Victoria University of Wellington. Her work explores policy,
implementation and governance in complex systems, with a focus on collaboration and adaptive practice in the public sector.
Dr Claire Gear is a Senior Research Fellow at AUT’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Trauma Research. She leads the HRC-funded Atawhai project on supporting safe, relational responses to family violence in primary care and is committed to centring lived expertise in research and practice. ​
