No other performer is as synonymous with MOTOWN as William "Smokey" Robinson. It was Robinson who urged his friend, Berry Gordy Jr. to form the label during the late '50s. It was Robinson who gave the company its first million seller, "Shop Around" in 1961 and the MOTOWN label its first #1 hit, "My Guy", which he wrote in 1964 for Mary Wells.
