Background: INTRODUCTION: The world squash champion, Geoff Hunt of Australia, and his fellow countryman, Cam Nancarrow, met in the final of the 1977 British Open squash championships at Wembley on Monday (4 April).

SYNOPSIS: The match was a reply of the 1968-69 final which Hunt won in straight sets. It was the sixth time Hunt has reached the final since he first played in the competition 13 years ago.

To reach the final, Hunt beat Jonah Barrington of Britain in a semifinal on Saturday (2 April) 9-5, 9-2, 9-0. Barrington has been seeking his seventh win in the championships. In the other semi-final, Nancarrow beat Ahmed Safwat of Egypt, 9-1, 9-6, 6-9, 9-1.

In this year's final, Hunt took the first two sets, 9-4, 9-4, and looked set to win the title in straight sets. However, Nancarrow, the third ranked player, had other ideas.

Nancarrow fought back into the game and finally won the third set 10-8. But his revival was short-lived.

The world champion quickly took the lead in the fourth set and went on to win the set 9-4.

In taking the title again, he became only the fifth player to win the championship four times or more since it was first played in 1930.

Nancarrow won GBP1260 (2,200 dollars US) for his second place... some consolation for another defeat by Hunt, a player Nancarrow has never beaten.

Hunt's prize for his win was GBP1,850 (3200 dollars US) and the satisfaction of joining a select band of champion squash players.
