Dusty Rhodes announced a tournament for the inaugural NXT title in August 2012. In the first round, Richie Steamboat faced Leo Kruger. Richie countered Kruger and hit him with the Sling Blade to advance. Drew McIntyre faced Seth Rollins. Drew dodged Seth, Seth dodged Drew too and then hit him with The Blackout to advance. Michael McGillicutty faced Justin Gabriel. McGillicutty dodged Gabriel and hit him with the McGillicutter to advance. Bo Dallas faced Jinder Mahal. Jinder caught Dallas in the Camel Clutch and tapped him out to advance. In the semi final, Jinder faced Steamboat. Jinder dodged Steamboat, caught him in the Camel Clutch and tapped him out to advance. McGillicutty faced Seth Rollins. Seth hit McGillicutty with a turnbuckle powerbomb and then with the Blackout to advance. Jinder interrupted, they stared each other down and Dusty wished them luck in the final. Jinder attacked Seth, Seth fought back and threw him out. Next week, things got heated between them, Jinder attacked him, Seth fought back, threw him out and jumped outside on him. In the final, Seth hit Jinder with a turnbuckle powerbomb, hit him with The Blackout and pinned him to become the first NXT Champion.
