Roseanne Park was born in 1997 in New Zealand to South Korean parents and moved at age 7 to Melbourne. She sang in church choir and played piano and guitar. At age 15, her father suggested she audition for a South Korean entertainment company in Sydney. She initially thought it a joke due to the distance and difficulty of becoming a singer overseas, but she came in first out of 700 participants and two months later found herself in Seoul. A few years later, she was one quarter of Blackpink, the "girl crush" queens of K-pop. (I covered their song with Selena Gomez, "Ice Cream", in #Frey2020.) Rose went solo along with the other ladies and in October 2024 released the collaboration "Apt" with Bruno Mars as her lead single. The song became her second number one single on the Billboard Global 200 and made her the first solo female K-pop artist to reach #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart (and the Billboard Hot 100). As Rose says, "APT is actually my favourite Korean drinking game that I play with my friends back home. It's so simple, puts a smile on your face, and breaks the ice at any party. One night in the studio, I taught my crew how to play the game. Everyone was fascinated, especially when I started the chant, so we played around with it, and I said we should make a song out of it... and after Bruno joined the track, the rest became history!"
