Over the past year this mural called "Chicano Pop" by Mayra Zamora has become a familiar sight to folks driving past the art center on Shoreline Boulevard. But come October, it will be replaced with a new mural by Corpus Christi artist Ben Munoz.
He's a printmaker so it was a bit unusual to select him for a mural project. But art center director Diana Bluntzer says Ben submitted a really intriguing concept. She says, "He'll up paper prints but the actual carved wood from which he makes a print... that will be the art work that goes up on the mural."
Bluntzer also says the selection committee also liked the fact that Ben's proposal was designed to be interactive with the public. She says, People will be able to come with paper which we're going to be providing, and they can do rubbings and take away little pieces of the murals anytime they want, we just loved the idea, we've never seen it before, and we're very excited."
