One of the most mysterious figures of medieval history is the legendary Rurik. Ruler of Novgorod, founder of Rus’, and father of a dynasty that would rule the Russkayan lands until 1598. He is seen as a founding father of modern Russia, and a national symbol: a symbol of pride. Owing to the national importance of Rurik, his identity and very existence is of utmost importance.
