Lawrenceville: Why do we use Harkness?

In our latest admission video by The Film Guys, Lawrenceville students and faculty agree - there are many reasons to appreciate Harkness discussions. Everyone at the table is equal. No one sits in the front or at the back. Everyone is side-by-side, even the teacher. It's a space to share your views whether they are the same as or different as your classmates. It's about learning when to speak and when to listen. And it works best when everyone speaks which also means everyone listens. These discussions have a way of including everyone - even the quieter kids. Because it's easy to share your thoughts when you know everyone around you respects you. By listening to what other's have to say, we develop a view that is the sum of everybody's understanding - not just your own. Ultimately, it's all about respect and appreciation for one another. You see it everywhere at Lawrenceville - and it all begins at the Harkness Table.
