Step into television history with Julia (1968), starring the legendary Diahann Carroll, one of the first Black women to lead her own primetime network sitcom. This special presentation features Season 1, Episodes 1–5 combined, along with original educational opening and closing commentary created by The BLK History Channel to provide important historical insight and context.
Diahann Carroll’s groundbreaking role as Julia Baker—a widowed nurse raising her young son—challenged stereotypes and opened new doors for Black representation on television. Before Julia, Black characters were rarely allowed to exist outside of harmful or limited roles. Carroll’s performance helped reshape what America saw, understood, and expected from Black women on screen.
In our intro, we explore:

• How Diahann Carroll became a cultural trailblazer
• The feedback—both praise and criticism—the show received in its time
• The production team and actors who helped shape the series
• How this sitcom influenced future shows featuring Black families and Black women in leading roles
Our closing commentary reflects on the show’s legacy today, the shift in representation it helped spark, and why preserving TV history like this is essential for understanding American culture.
