The Thule Air Base in Greenland was originally built at the start of the Cold War to provide a refueling stop for US bombers. Now, home to several US military groups, the location of the base has some of the most extreme weather conditions in the world, with temperatures plunging down to -60oF and wind speeds of 207 miles per hour.

Despite the remote location of the base, security of even the non-military buildings is an important issue. In a bid to ease and enhance access management and flexibility, a decade ago it was decided to safeguard the base with an electronic access control system. After careful evaluation, Greenland Contractors chose to install the SiPass Entro range from Siemens.

The Initial installation covered 280 doors in 36 buildings, with 4 computers providing centralised control in the base's Hilltop security facility. 10 years on, the system now covers approximately 380 doors in 57 buildings. Siemen's SiPass Entro Software is an important feature of the installation, as it can be used to give the fire brigade unobstructed access to buildings in the event of a fire alarm.

The complete and effective Siemens system has proved to be ideal for The Thule Air Base. The system withstands harsh environments, offers excellent value for money and is easy to use, with even the vandal-proof card readers being able to resist polar bear attacks!
