Did an astronaut materialise in a British marshland?

May 1964, Solway Firth, Cumbria, UK: On a family day out, in a quiet marsh, Jim Templeton, a firefighter, takes three snapshots of his five year old daughter. When the photos are developed, the middle image shows a man in a spacesuit standing behind his daughter. The figure was not there at the time the snapshot was taken and Kodak find no signs of fakery.

A spaceman had projected his image towards a young girl...

Or did he?

Templeton and his daughter were not the only people present on Solway Firth that day - his wife, Annie, was also there. Other photos show her wearing a light blue dress. Noting the awkward angle of the 'spaceman's arm' it becomes clear that it is Mrs Templeton - over exposed - walking away from the camera. This becomes clear when the image's exposure corrected.

Templeton did not see his wife in the shot due to the viewfinder of his camera cropping the scene but not the exposed frame of film.

Was the astronaut a projection from a parallel universe?

Did an innocent mistake become a legendary photograph?
