One question frequently asked is: What do I have to go through to have a tummy tuck? The recovery afterwards is always a big concern. Now, it is a moderately big surgery. It will put you out of work for probably about 10 days to 14 days, and out of exercise and vigorous activity for at least 4 to 6 weeks. This depends on how quickly your swelling goes down and how quickly you're healing.

The first few days after surgery, you'll be on the couch and just up and around walking a little bit. You will have an abdominal binder on that gives some compression. If you have some liposuction with it, you'll also have some stockings over top of that. All of those are meant to help the skin not stretch too much with the swelling, and to adhere back down in the right position so it doesn’t sag. You wear those garments day and night for at least the first few week afterwards. After the first few weeks, we can go to just while exercising, but certainly you need that compression.

Another issue that comes up after surgery is when can you take a bath or a shower? With the tummy tuck, there is a drainage tube that's in, and what we don't want to have happen is water to get up along that drain tube and cause infection. So, while that drain tube is in, no bath, no shower. You can do a sponge bath, that's fine, but we don't want water getting up in the wrong place. The day after the drain comes out, then you can hop in the shower, but before you do a real bath or a hot tub or something like that, you need to probably be a good month out from things because we want everything well sealed so we don't risk the chance of having an infection.

Most people, by the time they reach 6 weeks out from their surgery, they feel like they're back to themselves again, just their slimmer, more beautiful self.
