Censorship of news coverage on the Hong Kong democracy protests in Mainland China

Описание к видео Censorship of news coverage on the Hong Kong democracy protests in Mainland China

In September and October 2014 there were massive pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, but Mainland Chinese media presented a very restricted view of these events. Independent international broadcast media are available in luxury hotel rooms, but when coverage of the events in Hong Kong came on screen on such channels censors blacked it out until the news item was over. Here's a sample of such a news blackout of a BBC TV news report recorded in early October 2014. The TV is on all the time, even if it seems to be switched off (the 'on' light can be seen at the bottom right of the TV). Similar censorship occurs for news reports of activities in Hong Kong in rememberance of the 4 June 1989 suppression in Beijing. Sometimes instead of a blank screen there will be a sudden cut to a public service announcement. The BBC news website in English is normally available in China, but the BBC Chinese language news website is normally not available. A few days after this was recorded even the English language website became temporarily unavailable to prevent people seeing a widely circulated video of a group of Hong Kong policemen beating up a handcuffed man lying on the floor.
