Flaked Adjunct Comparison - Unmalted Grains To Lighten Body

Want to know the difference between flaked maize and flaked rice? This video compares the two flaked adjuncts to an all-malt beer.

This week, Mike presents three different brews to compare the effect of body lightening adjuncts, Corn and Rice.

Mike brewed a control beer with 100% base malt or normal 2-row. He also made two more beers where he substituted in 10% of Flaked Corn or Flaked rice.

The corn and rice beers were noticeably lighter in color than the 100% base malt beer. The corn beer had a subtle grainy aroma in comparison to the more prominent mild dough like quality of the control. The rice beer had almost no perceptible aroma coming off of it.

The rice beer had more of a hoppy zing to it reminiscent of American Craft Lager. We postulate that the rice is so bland it lets even the most subtle of spicy hop character shine. The corn beer's flavor was not corn sweet but it was a softer more rounded malt flavor.

Let us know your experiences with Flaked Corn or Rice in the comments!

Cheers!
