Large language models like ChatGPT are all the rage and are proliferating at a rapid pace. And rightly so: what they are capable of is truly remarkable. For academia, however, these AI models may be viewed as a double-edged sword: they offer new ways of fueling productivity, but also present major challenges for course instruction and classroom pedagogy. As a result, familiarity with these models varies greatly – some have immediately embraced them; others remain more cautious.

One thing seems certain: these LLMs appear here to stay. And so it behooves us to gain a working familiarity with how they work and what they are capable of. With that in mind, Dr. Matthew Shane (Associate Professor in Psychology @ Ontario Tech) will be hosting a 1-hour workshop entitled Introduction to LLMs for Academics in which he’ll use ChatGPT to provide an overview of some of the use cases and practical applications of LLMs for academia. The workshop will be non-technical, and will cover a range of functionality, from the basics (e.g. How to begin?), to common use cases (e.g. Summarize, Revise, Expand, Create), to more advanced techniques (e.g. Role play; Multi-shot Prompting; API usage). These demonstrations will almost certainly raise questions regarding the implications of these models for both research and teaching, and some initial suggestions and solutions will be offered. However, the primary goal of the workshop is to help users gain a richer familiarity with the system, so that they can be better positioned to make informed decisions regarding how they would like to incorporate LLMs into their research and/or teaching practices.
