There are no weak points in the round column due to its circular shape. The square column has four weak points due to the corner edges. Round columns are strong in compression so they can carry more load.

Are circular columns better?, circular columns are especially suitable for seismic prone areas where high strength and ductility are needed in all directions. It is much easier to confine the concrete using special reinforcement in circular columns (or square) than in other shapes.

Why are circular columns not preferred:-circular columns occupy lesser area when compared to the square columns hence it is preferred for pier and columns where in there is traffic expected ( men or vehicles). Construction wise it is easy to do with a square or rectangular column, because you need special molds for circular column which cannot be reused too.

Why do we use rectangular columns:- rectangular column is chosen for uniaxial and biaxial loading because the rectangular shape reduces the moments in lateral directions and long column mainly fail by buckling so there is need to reduce the deflection in lateral direction i.e x&z direction
