(1) The ones that cling to antiquated 20th century game design principles based on grinding and gathering:

(2) the Pokemon games I actually like playing, which are usually reskins of more compelling games.

Pokemon Shining Pearl is the former, I'm afraid. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond may simply be an extension of that.
