Hirendra Kumar Ganguly, fondly known as ‘Hiru Babu’, was born in Kolkata 27th April 1910. His father, Manmatha Nath Ganguly, was a Municipal Magistrate and Deputy Registrar of the Calcutta High Court. The family also had a musical heritage, with Hirendra's father being a skilled tabla player. His maternal grandfather, Rajinikanth, was particularly passionate about music and played a key role in establishing Bhavanipur Sangeet Sammilani, where he served as the editor and leader for life. He gave special encouragement to his two sons Krishnakumar Ganguly (Natu babu) and Shyam Ganguly in the pursuit of music and as a result, the former became proficient in tabla and the later in playing sarod. In this environment, Hiru babu developed a love of music from childhood. Encouraged by his father, he learned to play the tabla. His father taught tabla to him and others for free, promoting music. Hiru babu showed progress in tabla playing through his talent and efforts. He trained with his father's guru, Nagendra Nath Bose, for five years and lastly for 12-13 years from Lucknow, India's famous tabla player Khalifa Ustad Abid Hussain.
