This jewelry and pottery was recovered from the famous Tomb #7 at nearby Monte Alban
the greatest capital left by the Zapotecs. Their descendants still speak the language of their ancestors and constitute the fourth largest language group in Mexico. This giant mountain top was sculpted by hand and the formidable ceremonial center arose. Wave after wave of indigenous cultures occupied Monte Alban embellishing its elaborate and powerful design.

One theory has it that Monte Alban functioned as an ancient university and medical school
and that these mysterious figures known as "the dancers" represent disease-stricken and deformed bodies
and may have been an early "medical dictionary".
