Since the latest update, the photo editor Adobe Photoshop CC 2021 now offers a very cool new tool: the AI Sky Replacement. Using this tool, you can replace the sky of your photos with a single click, Photoshop will do all the masking for you. Of course, it doesn’t always produce perfect results, but Adobe also added a few options with which you can do some manual adjustments. Plus, the AI sky replacement puts everything in separate layers, so you can do further manual adjustments yourself.

I shot the original photo during daytime with the intention of applying a sky replacement to give the photo a cool sunset sky. The subject here isn’t too complex which I thought might help the ‘AI’ to produce a more realistic sky replacement. For the sky I simply important one out of my own library (Adobe also offers a few skies but I want to use a unique one). Sadly, the result was not perfect. There was still a very subtle, but visible halo around the tree in the foreground. I was able to reduce it by using the fade edge slider and blend both images together using the lightning and color adjustments sliders.

Still, after applying it with said settings, it didn’t look perfect. Here it’s very useful to have control over the layers and masks that the sky replacement tool has created. With those I was able to remove the halo manually using an overlay brush on the sky layer mask (that’s the same workflow as if I would do the whole sky replacement manually). Also, I was able to use the layers to adjust the foreground colors some more.

In the end I think the AI sky replacement is very good at masking out the foreground, although the result was not perfect. Especially with more complex scenes you might want to do it manually using luminosity masks. If you’re in a hurry this tool can really help, also the included sky library is a cool feature.
