The Hulk is a superhero featured in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, the character made his first appearance in the inaugural issue of The Incredible Hulk (May 1962). Throughout his comic book journeys, the character, who experiences dissociative identity disorder (DID), is primarily represented by his alter ego, the Hulk—a green-skinned, muscular humanoid with seemingly limitless physical strength. His other identity, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner, is a physically frail, socially withdrawn, and emotionally reserved physicist, and the two often harbor mutual resentment.

Marvel Comics, a comic book publisher based in New York City, has been a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company since December 31, 2009, and is part of Disney Publishing Worldwide as of March 2023. Established in 1939 by Martin Goodman under the name Timely Comics, the company transitioned to being widely recognized as Atlas Comics by 1951. The Marvel era commenced in August 1961 with the debut of The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles crafted by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and many others.
