How to Handle a Lob in Tennis

Many recreational players are fearful of the lob. It can be frustrating trying to run back or having to hit an overhead, however, lobs at the recreational level are often struck without topspin and you, therefore, have a good chance to win the point. So how do you handle a lob when playing tennis:

🎾 Don’t panic! It’s ok to get lobbed, it’s not the end of the point. You have a chance to recover
🎾 Do Not run underneath the ball! This severely limits your options. Most likely you will shovel the ball over your head back in play, therefore, severely limiting your chances of winning the point. Even worse, you might get hit by the ball
🎾 Leave the ball to your side as you are running back. Now you have a chance to hit a forehand or a backhand which makes it possible to turn defense into offense
🎾 As spectacular as the behind-the-back and between the legs shots are the reality is that they rarely result in a winning point and should, therefore, be avoided at all cost.
