OCKBROOK AND BORROWASH: Erewash Parish #12 of 14

Описание к видео OCKBROOK AND BORROWASH: Erewash Parish #12 of 14

I liked this place. It’s got all the rural charm of a village in the middle of nowhere, yet its still close enough to a major UK city to be classed as suburbia, if you’re that way inclined. At the top of Bakehouse Lane the road turns right into a Moravian Settlement. It features many large houses, and cottage industries developed here. The trades were many. Glovemakers, shoemakers and tailors were all established.

It has at least four pubs. The Royal Oak is the oldest licensed premises in the village. Dating from the early 1700s, it brewed its own beer using a well outside. During WWII, The Queens Head was used by the Home Guard as their HQ. The one that looks the prettiest is the White Swan, which stands in Church Street and faces All Saints Church.

By walking over a footbridge we cross the A52 – or Brian Clough Way if you will – into a much different settlement that’s hugely residential. Running through it is a stream, named the Ock Brook. On either side of the Ock Brook there’s open public spaces. It wasn’t until the late 1800s it started to grow and now it is the larger of the two villages. The biggest catalyst for the growth was the local industry – now there’s something we’ve heard before right?

Initially trade boomed thanks to the Derby Canal when it arrived in 1796. That would gradually fall into decline after the introduction of the railway during the mid 19th century; and by the 1960s it was abandoned. The railway soon followed suit. Passenger rail service ceased in 1966 and the railway station was demolished in 1994

I could have made the walk longer by including the site of the old station. However this was already a long walk, so I chose to forgo that, and the Derby Canal which is also close by. This is OCKBROOK AND BORROWASH.
