He was the grandson of the powerful Queen Victoria and Emperor Alexander II of Russia, and a first cousin to German Kaiser Wilhelm II, King George V of the United Kingdom, and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Alfred Alexander William Ernest Albert, born on October 15, 1874, was the son of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. It seemed fate had destined him for a brilliant future, but his path was anything but simple.
Life at court is often full of hidden dramas. Alfred's parents, two strong and authoritative individuals, frequently clashed, which likely influenced the young prince's character. He began a military career, but the uniform couldn't rein in his unruly disposition. Prince Alfred was known for his fondness for alcohol and a tendency towards scandals, causing deep concern to his family, especially his mother, Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. These issues severely undermined his reputation in high society.
Alfred's last years were shrouded in mystery. His health deteriorated, and rumors of his dissolute lifestyle multiplied. The official cause of death, announced by the court, was tuberculosis. However, European capitals whispered of a far more dramatic conclusion – an attempted suicide. It's said that in January 1899, during his parents' 25th wedding anniversary celebration, Alfred shot himself. He was found severely wounded and urgently transported to Friedenstein Castle, where, despite all medical efforts, the prince died on February 6, 1899, at the young age of just 24.
The family was devastated by his sudden death, as it left the duchy without a direct heir. His father, Duke Alfred, was deeply saddened and, reportedly, angered. To preserve the family's reputation, the true circumstances were concealed, and the public was presented with the tuberculosis story. Alfred was buried in the ducal mausoleum in Coburg, leaving behind more questions than answers.
After his death, the next in line for the duchy was his father's elder brother, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, who renounced his rights in favor of his son, Prince Charles Edward. Alfred's tragic death, full of enigmas, became one of the dark pages in the history of European royal houses of the late 19th century, reminding us that even privilege cannot always protect from personal tragedies and the consequences of one's choices.
