Even if you’ve never written long-form SEO blog content, and only written ad copy, academic papers, or other types of content, this is where your start begins in the world of search engine content. Once you finish this guide, read the included resources, and test out the tools in it, you’re ready to write. No more waiting or reading SEO theory – it’s time you start driving traffic & making money organically.

1. Where to Start
Before we get into the writing process itself, we need to create a baseline understanding of what SEO-friendly blog content looks like. Below, you’ll find only the most essential resources – we’re looking to streamline this process & get started, reading about SEO theory for hours on end only delays this.

2. Big-Picture Takeaways
Assuming you’ve read the above resources, these should be your biggest takeaways:
Great SEO content is easy to read & understand, even for complex topics.
Optimize for readability (subheadings, bullet points, white space, etc.)
SEO content writing is as much of an art as it is a science. Yes, there are frameworks & guidelines to follow. But ultimately, you’re writing for people – don’t write like a robot.
Write like you are having a conversation with a person.
You might be feeling overwhelmed by the number of new topics and things to remember in these resources – don’t worry about it. Truly, SEO copywriting can be simplified down into simply this:
Google wants to rank content that is helpful, accurate, easy-to-read/understand, and trustworthy. Your ultimate goal is to provide value to the searcher, not “hack” your way into the #1 spot with something you learned from an outdated Reddit thread.
3. What to Expect
You won’t be great at it right away – that’s okay. Your first few drafts will likely have plenty of revisions & suggestions. Don’t take this personally, but we are here to help brands make money through organic search. Feedback on your writing is purely objective as it relates to that goal, there is absolutely nothing personal about it.
As complex as it may seem, everything in SEO can be separated into one of three buckets: technical, on-page, and off-page. Obviously, blog writing fits in the on-page bucket. But even then, it’s only a fraction of everything we consider on-page SEO. Your writing is a piece of the puzzle – without everything else, your writing means nothing. And without your writing, everything else means nothing.
The average American reads at a 7th to 8th grade level, according to The Literacy Project. Laugh all you want, but this is who we’re writing for. What that means for you is shorter sentences, simpler words, and 100% clarity, even if you’re covering complex topics.
With that being said, these tools are far from perfect. You cannot simply ask it to write about X TOPIC and expect it to deliver a perfect piece of content.
Simply put, as you improve at writing and the other parts of our strategies improve, we all get better (and make more money). And frankly, that’s what we’re about here.
