Twycross Zoo Chimpanzee Integration: Jambo's Response to Newcomer

Tommy was sitting by the window. Jambo approached, and I wondered what was going to happen. Tommy turned around to face the alpha male. Jambo just sat down peacefully in front of the newcomer, and then something great happened: Tommy extended his arm towards Jambo, and Jambo reassured him by touching his hand. It was such a great moment between those two. Jomar came into the mix and started grooming Jambo. Tommy left at that point to go into the other room. Kibali joined Jambo and Jomar. A bit later, Jomar moved, and Kibali continued to groom Jambo. Josie had a look at them grooming each other. A few close-ups of Jambo at the end.

Tommy kept himself still out of the way at feeding time. I'm sure this will ease as he's only just been integrated and he has to find his place in the hierarchy.

Hairless Chimp Jambo, the alpha male was born at Twycross Zoo in England. He has had alopecia, a form of hair loss since his youth. He was born on June 9, 1982.
In November 2018, Jambo lost his ear, possibly due to an accidental fight with his mother. Attempts to reattach it with skin glue failed as he continued to pick on it. In October 2022, he also lost a toe, with the cause unknown but possibly related to fights and agitation during mating season.
In 2018, the chimpanzees received a new habitat called "Chimpanzee Eden." It spans 1,160 square meters and includes two seven-meter-high indoor spaces connected to a large outdoor area with climbing frames and huts.
