The lives of African slaves in British Colonial America were far worse than the slavery practiced in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. Native tribes took people as slaves on raids, enslaved those convicted of crimes, and traded slaves between tribes but the slaves were considered to have done something to deserve their fate.
