“Without any doubt the highest honors go to the musicians from Fresno. At grips with wildly difficult charts, they display machine-like precision, good humour and, most importantly, ‘Le Swing’!” (L’est Vaudois, Montreux, July 11, 1979)
The performance that you will hear on this album represents the culmination of years of rehearsals, concerts, festivals and tours by members of the CSUF “A” Jazz Band. Many of these men and women had been members for four and five years and a bond of affection and respect grew between each of us. Rarely does a group become as close both musically as well as personally as this band. You will hear this cohesiveness expressed in the joyous performance the band gave at Montreux.
Our thanks go to the people who made this trip possible: President Norman A. Baxter, Vice President Louis Volpp, and Bill Homes, Dean John Martin, who helped every step of the way, Earle Bassett and the Student Senate, Dean Fikes and Judy, Jack Wilcox for the great “Bulldog shirts”, John Heard and the music faculty for continued support, and last, but certainly not least, Gordy and Hans for taking such good care of us.
It is with great pride that I present to you the 1978/79 CSUF Jazz Band “A” LIVE AT THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL. - Larry Sutherland Director of Bands, CSU Fresno
