Of the 30,000 babies delivered at Intermountain Healthcare Hospitals each year, most are healthy and go home with their families after a short stay in the well baby nursery. However, about 2,500 babies each year are admitted to our Newborn Intensive Care Units (NICU). Of those, about 10% experience some degree of respiratory failure and require a special mechanical ventilator to breathe.
This type of treatment helps the newborn baby in many ways, but unfortunately it may cause harm. The biggest potential harm in this case is that it may lead a path to respiratory infection.
In the ongoing process to improve outcomes for our NICU patients, Intermountain Healthcare strives to reduce airway infections, and reduce the number of babies who have to go home with supplemental oxygen. We have accomplished this through the development of a new solution that we add to the airway system.
High salt solutions can actually damage the airway of the newborn baby and make the baby more susceptible to acquiring infection. To address this problem, Dr. Christensen at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, patterned a solution based on the naturally occurring fluids present in a developing baby's airway. This solution is called Respia.
Intermountain Healthcare has tested Respia in three separate clinical trials at NICU's around Utah. Newborns receiving this new treatment did better in terms of fewer infections, and fewer of them needed to go home with supplemental oxygen.
