The BJP’s move to rope in a faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar in an expedient ruling alliance in Maharashtra is said to be aimed at boosting the party’s chances in the Lok Sabha elections next year. However, a very alliance like this may run counter to the BJP’s attempt over the past few years to create a narrative that counters the ‘Maratha-dominated’ politics of the NCP, and also to promote leaders who can take on NCP bigwigs on their turf.
