The Santa Clara County Medical Association’s Environmental Health Committee presents the 2024 Fall Environment and Health three-part webinar series. In this series we look at some ways to reduce the burden of climate change and illness, understanding that our health is inextricably related to a cleaner environment and a stable climate. We have a number of experts who will discuss climate change, environmental toxins and their relation to diseases, in addition to better choices we all can make for the benefit of the next generation who are affected by our decisions.
An epidemic of chronic illness is upon us in the U.S. Almost half the population of Americans suffer from a chronic illness which is ongoing, and often not curable. These conditions include cancer, thyroid disease, diabetes, asthma and autoimmune disease. Neurologic diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are the fastest growing neurological diseases in the world. Since the industrial age physicians have witnessed these rising epidemics in their patients who often have multiple chronic illnesses that exponentially complicate their care. These illnesses not only affect the quality of their patient’s lives and but also that of their family. The cost of medical care has skyrocketed and become an individual and national burden, with an enlarging cycle of increased pharmaceutical use and pollution, medical waste and energy consumption… and a nation of ill health. Scientific research is revealing the connection between chronic disease, genetics and preventable environmental factors- pesticides, flame retardants, antimicrobials, Teflon in hundreds of products we use, as well as food packaging. Three experts will address the scientific evidence pointing to the root causes of illness and what we can do to address this problem.
