This is Why you Need your Instrument Rating

Routine IFR training flight with my instructor Matt out of Skill Aviation at Waukegan in January 2013. The weather was VFR with forecast to remain VFR for the rest of the day.

While practicing some approaches nearby at Burlington (KBUU) we noticed the weather deteriorating significantly and decided to head back to Waukegan.

The situation got quite hairy with several airplanes wanting to get back to Waukegan VFR or SVFR and several others filing a pop-up approach into Waukegan.

We finally received our IFR clearance into Waukegan and flew the ILS 23. This was an amazing lesson for me on how the weather can turn ugly and bite you when you least expect it.

If you didn't have an instructor on board or were instrument rated and current what would you do? Wait time for SVFR was minimum 20 minutes and the weather could deteriorate even more.

This is why you need your instrument rating folks. Call Skill Aviation if you are in the Chicago area. www.skillaviation.com. They will get you up and going.
