Ep.67 The Legacy of Korean Immigrants in Hawaii

Hawaii is a renowned holiday destination characterized by its natural beauty, and also home to one of the most vibrant Asian-American communities in the United States. It is also the place where the very first wave of Korean immigrants arrived in search of opportunities abroad in the early 1900s. They worked primarily on sugar plantations and led difficult lives, but never gave up on their dreams of a better future for their children and their motherland, eventually forming Hawaii’s successful Korean-American community in the present day.
Director Lee Jin-young was born and raised in Korea, but moved to Hawaii as a young adult, learning about the history of Korean immigrants there and the sacrifices they made during her time there. She has since dedicated her career to tell the story of Hawaii’s Korean-American community through the documentary films “Words of Wisdom from the Rainbow State” and “Songs of Love from Hawaii” (scheduled for release in June 2024). In this week’s edition of the Globalists, we sit down with filmmaker Lee Jin-young to learn more about the Korean diaspora in Hawaii and what their lives tell us about the meaning of love and sacrifice.

아름다운 자연을 담은 휴양지로 널리 알려진 미국의 하와이. 미국 내에서 아시아인이 살기 좋은 주로도 손꼽히는 이곳은, 사실 대한민국 역사상 최초로 대규모 이민이 있던 곳이기도 하다. 1900년대 사탕수수 농장에서 고된 노동을 버티면서도 미래에 대한 꿈을 포기하지 않고, 고국에 대한 사랑을 마음에 담아뒀던 그들이 있었기에, 지금의 하와이 한인 사회는 성공적으로 정착하면서 발전을 이룩할 수 있었다.
한편 한국에서 태어나고 자랐지만, 하와이로 이주한 이후 그곳 한인들의 희생과 사랑을 알게 된 이진영 감독. 그녀는 영화 [무지개나라의 유산]에 이어, 영화 [하와이연가](※2024년 6월 개봉 예정)를 통해 하와이 한인 역사 속 교훈과 사랑을 꾸준히 전하는 작업을 하고 있는데. [The Globalists]에서는 이진영 감독을 초대해 그녀가 담아낸 잔잔하면서도 감동적인 다큐멘터리의 여정 속, 한인 디아스포라의 삶에서 우리가 알아야 할 메시지가 무엇인지 들어 본다.
