IUEC Local 133 Mechanics Talk Elevator Safety

The central theme of ElevatorInfo’s Home Safe for the Holidays safety awareness campaign is that the most important part of an elevator constructor’s work each day is making it home safe at the end of their shift.

“Having the safety awareness and the knowledge to do things the correct way (allows) me to go home safe to my family,” said Spencer Zeman, an elevator mechanic out of IUEC Local 133 we caught up with in Austin, Texas.

Spencer and another Local 133 mechanic, Patrick Shaw, talked with us about how looking out for each other helps ensure they’re always working safe. “It's nice knowing you have brothers and sisters who always have your back when it comes to performing a job or working safely,” said Patrick.

The safety-focused foundational curriculum elevator constructor apprentices study at the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP), along with weekly toolbox talks and quarterly safety training provided by companies like TKE, and regular reviews of the safety alerts posted on the IUEC website keep safety awareness at the forefront of IUEC mechanics’ minds every day.
