What are the reasons for vaginal smell?

Description:

It is normal for your vagina to have a slight odour. This changes with hormonal shifts during pregnancy, menopause, and the menstrual cycle. Abnormal vaginal odour that happens because of infection or some other problem is usually accompanied by signs and symptoms such as itching, burning, irritation or discharge.

Causes:

Vaginal odour may vary throughout your menstrual cycle and may be stronger right after having sex. Normal sweating also can cause vaginal odour. It may be tempting to wash or use a vaginal deodorant to decrease vaginal odour. However, these products may actually increase irritation and other vaginal symptoms.

An overgrowth of vaginal bacteria is the most common vaginal infection, called bacterial vaginosis. It causes a vaginal odour.
Trichomoniasis — a sexually transmitted infection — also can lead to vaginal odour.
Generally, if you have vaginal odour without other vaginal symptoms, it's unlikely that it is abnormal.

Precaution:

Safe vaginal hygiene practices can reduce odour. Some steps are:

Urinating immediately after sex.
Using a gentle, fragrance-free soap on the vulva only. Soap entering into the vagina can alter vaginal pH, causing infections and a foul odour.
Changing underwear daily, or when underwear is sweaty or soiled.
Washing underwear in unscented products.
Showering after sweating or exercise as trapped sweat can increase vaginal odour.
Washing the vulva with water if there is an unpleasant odour. Between showers, use a towel to gently wipe down the area, removing sweat and other sources of odour.

Conclusion:

Unless the odour is particularly foul, vaginal odour is normal. In case you notice a fishy odour, contact a gynaecologist who can determine the cause.
