Chevrolet Camaro 1968 Camaro Z28 - Amazing Quality and Incredibly Original - Tour underneath!

When Chevrolet announced production of a new model called a Camaro, a member of the press asked: “What is a Camaro?”, the answer was: “A small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” It wasn’t, of course, but it did. Produced as a direct response to Ford’s runaway success with the Mustang, the Camaro was cast in the same mould: standard production floorpan, coupé body, rear wheel drive, and sports options. Initially, the Z28 was an out-and-out competition model configured for success in the SCCA Trans-Am series – prime Mustang territory. Z28 specification included front power disc brakes, close-ratio four-speed gearbox, uprated suspension, and the all-important racing stripes. More importantly, the engine in the Z28 was a unique 302ci (4·9-litre) V8 with aluminium intake manifold, 4-barrel Holley carburettor, and solid lifters. Power was rated at 290bhp, but this was one of those rare occasions when the factory claimed output was lower than the real world output – Chevrolet wanted the lower figure for insurance purposes and so the Camaro could slip into certain competition classes. Real output of the Z28 came closer to 400bhp. This particular Z28 is a ’68 model, which is pretty rare in America, but in this country, it’s even rarer, being one of only two. The previous owner (an ex-Rolls Royce coach-painter) has detailed the car beautifully in its original factory British Green. All body panels, door trims and seals are original, as are the seats, headlining, carpets, shocks, engine, gearbox (matching numbers) and even the pedal rubbers! New parts include the clutch, release bearing and exhaust. The Classic Camaro Club have authenticated the car and verified that it has its original engine, and that it was produced in Norwood, Ohio in April, 1968. This is a very rare car with very few miles on the clock: you will not find another one like it. This one has had the attention of a master craftsman.
