Taken over the space of a few days, here's a selection of footage from this old level crossing at the main entrance to the extensive Port of Bristol in Avonmouth at the Avon and Severn Estuaries. This is one of just ten level crossings nationwide to still have the 1970's 'BR Western Region' barriers, although the ones here are beginning to show their age and it is likely a full renewal will not be too far off. However, how they will go about any renewal with the extensive HGV usage and being the main entrance to an important docks remains to be seen.

Notably, one of the barriers is missing a boom light and was snapped by high wind back in 2024, but the rest are mostly holding up okay. The same, however cannot be said for one of the exit-side wigwags here, as one of the red modules has a lot of failed diodes. There are two very loud alarms, as well as railway speed limit signs acting as road speed limit signs, each located on the near-side wigwag masts. The impressive signal box beside this crossing is from where it is controlled, as is the line from Clifton Down to the terminus at Severn Beach.

The crossing can be seen active from both sides throughout this video, and these being filmed either later on or at the weekend meant that there was sparse road and HGV traffic, and perfectly clear shots were easy. Apologies for the slightly glary shot during that 10PM lowering I caught, as I was caught a little off-guard by the crossing's activation. I hope you enjoy these videos of this unique crossing!
