“The schools should have encouraged students to exercise more”
Tómas is 18 years old, and lives in Iceland. He was just finishing his second year in Icelandic high school when the The covid-19 pandemic started. Most of his school year he attended classes online.

During spring of 2020, normal schooling was disturbed imposing limits on the number of students in each classroom, banning the blending of students between classrooms and banning the use of cafeterias. Substantial limitations on people’s right to gather were put in place on March 16th, 2020. They lasted until the 4 th of May 2020 when schools were again able to operate in a conventional manner. Many schools had to rely on online teaching to some extent, some more than others.

Status of school closures in Iceland during the covid-19 pandemic:
Early childhood education: open
Primary education: closed March 21 – April 21
Secondary education: closed March 20 – May 20 & March 20 – April 20
Higher education: closed March 20 – May 20 & March 20 – April 20
