History of Kammalar

The Kammalar is a Tamil caste group found in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and in northeastern Sri Lanka. The Kammalars are involved in crafting. Kammalar is a generic term that comprises the communities of brass-workers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, carpenters and sculptors, kammalar's are classified and listed as backward class by both central government of India and State government of Tamil Nadu and kerala.

The Kammaalar claim to be descended from Vishwakarma, the architect of the gods. Vishwakarmas are basically Artisans in Society. The Vishwakarma community, also known as the Vishwabrahmin, is a social group of India. Contribution by these artisans who belong to the Vishwakarma community to the rural economy is quite signicant. The architectural beauty of the temples and idols of gods and goddesses is sculptors creation.
