The bridge inspection was completed using special snooper truck baskets that allow inspectors to see under the bridge deck.
Inspectors had to contend with thousands of double-crested cormorants, their nests, and their guano that covers areas of steel that needed to be inspected. A wildlife biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture accompanied the inspectors to provide on-site advice and expertise as they worked around the cormorants.
