The Umayyad caliphs built the iconic Dome of the Rock adjacent to Masjid al-Aqsa, which has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Jerusalem. The dome enshrines the sacred rock from which Prophet Muhammad ascended to the heavens during his Night Journey.

Throughout history, Masjid al-Aqsa has witnessed various political, religious, and military conflicts. It was captured and controlled by different empires, including the Crusaders, before eventually returning to Muslim rule under the leadership of Salahuddin Ayyubi (Saladin) in 1187 CE.

Since then, Masjid al-Aqsa has remained under the custodianship of the Islamic Waqf, which oversees its management and preserves its sanctity. The mosque continues to be a place of worship, education, and gathering for Muslims from around the world.

Despite political tensions and unrest in the region, Masjid al-Aqsa's historical and spiritual significance remains intact for Muslims globally. It serves as a symbol of unity and a focal point of prayer and spiritual contemplation. Muslims consider visiting and praying in Masjid al-Aqsa as a great honor and spiritual endeavor.

It is important to note that the history of Masjid al-Aqsa is deeply intertwined with the broader Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with various political and religious interests at play.
