"DJ" was released on David Bowie's 13th studio album, Lodger, in the spring of 1979. I remember this record being pretty poorly received at the time, there wasn't a whole lot of love for it. Lodger was the final album in Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy" and some critics at the time compared it unfavorably to the the earlier records in the group, Low and Heroes, which were released at the beginning and end of 1977. Personally, though the record was not quite a favorite on par with Low, it was certainly something I enjoyed and listened to more than Heroes.....I guess because it tended to rock more. Also, it seems much more varied in tone and content....some very experimental Bowie for sure...crunchy, groovy, and arty all at the same time!

This in another album for which time has brought more critical acclaim than was given at release....it's strengths, complexity, and brilliance have only become apparent and recognized by many decades after it first hit the street. Ironically, Lodger now rates 5 Stars in Rolling Stone Album Guide, while Heroes gets a measly 4.5! ;-) Great albums both.

Hoping to clean my plate from a few long-stalled Bowie projects, I've recently been pushing on the first track I began working from Lodger, "African Night Flight"...and subsequently on "DJ" as the fall back Bowie track when things got too frustrating there. Since the editing for "DJ" was of the sort where I didn't spend much time on structure or timing, this video got across the line first. Looking at the vid, it's one of those where although I was determined to push it out quickly....I can see that there is a better video buried inside this pretty good one! LOL!

Anyway....it's a great song and hopefully the vid will help a few people find and love the tune and give an extra kick to the experience for those who already know and love it!
