What exactly is the difference between beat and rhythm? We may use the terms a lot with students but how would you describe the manipulation of the element of duration that creates beat and rhythm? This video goes a little way to explaining it.

Foundation to Yr 2

In Music, students:
- become aware of rhythm, form and structure
- explore sounds as they learn to listen to and make music
- learn to perform with beat and tempo
- learn to listen as performers and as audience.

ACAMUM080 Develop aural skills by exploring and imitating sounds, rhythm patterns using body percussion

Skills and Knowledge
Rhythm - beat and rhythm, crotchet and quavers in pairs
Form - patterns

Years 3 -4

In Music, students:
- extend their understanding of the elements of music as they develop their aural skills
- recognise and discriminate between rhythm and beat
- learn to listen as performers and as audience, extending their awareness of themselves and others as performers and as audience.

ACAMUM085 Practise singing using elements of music including rhythm

Skills and knowledge

Rhythm
simple metres - 4/4
crotchet and quavers
tempo changes (faster and slower)
discriminating between beat and rhythm
demonstrating beat and tempo changes
