The Hoover Dam was built even at the expense of 107 workers. Do you know why? Unlike the traditional dam construction method, the Hoover Dam used the diversion tunnel method. At that time The workers cleverly built a temporary wall to divert the river water into four large pipes and let them take a detour. This sounds easy, but it is actually quite difficult to do. The excavator had not been invented at that time. It all depends on the hands of workers to stuff bags of explosives into it. After the workers evacuate, they will detonate remotely and then use forklifts to remove the gravel. After the gravel road is formed, it still needs to be reinforced. Laying steel mesh at the bottom, pouring concrete, and repeating. It finally took two years to successfully build a diversion gravel channel. However, the excavated gravel is also of great use. They were dumped into the river and gradually piled high to form an artificial dripping pattern, forcing the river water to flow out of the tunnels on both sides and realizing the diversion of the river. Engineers used the same construction technology to add two tunnels for drainage.
A cofferdam was set up downstream to prevent the river water from flowing back. After solving the river problem, the construction of the main body of the dam began. The traditional monolithic pouring method cannot adapt to the environment here and is easily washed away.
So engineers used modular pouring technology, just like building blocks, to pour the dam in sections. Each piece was completed independently and then spliced together. The gap in the middle is to accommodate the thermal expansion and contraction of the concrete and avoid cracks in the dam.
When the volumetric concrete solidifies, a large amount of heat energy is generated to prevent the dam from being damaged due to excessive temperature. Engineers laid cooling water pipes inside the dam and then introduced cold water to effectively control the temperature. This ensures the structural safety of the dam. In addition, there are special tunnels inside the dam to collect seepage water, reduce water pressure, and ensure the stability and long-term operation of the dam. The Dufo Dam is not only a flood control barrier.
It is also a huge power station. The power station located under the dam is equipped with 17 giant generators driven by water turbines, providing a stable source of power to the surrounding areas.
In order to cope with possible floods caused by extreme weather, spillways are designed on both sides of the dam. When the water level exceeds the safety line, the river water can be discharged downstream through these channels to avoid causing more deaths.
The original diversion tunnel will also play a role again, connected to the spillway to divert water and drain water. The completion of the Hoover Dam is not only a great victory of human engineering, but also the greatest reward for the cooperation between human wisdom and natural forces.
