Today we sample a newer bourbon from a Nashville distillery...the Nelson Brothers Classic Bourbon! Nelson's Greenbrier Distillery is probably better know for the bourbon this is replacing which is the Belle Meade. While the Belle Meade line will stay available in the Nashville area for now, the Nelson Bros. will be moving into their distribution channels. According to the website "Andy & Charlie Nelson were determined to make the inaugural Nelson Brothers offering a bourbon for all occasions. This expert blend of exceptional high-rye straight bourbon whiskeys, well-aged in new, charred American oak barrels, was carefully crafted to deliver on that promise. Nelson Brothers Classic Bourbon is a vigorous, versatile pour, equally pleasing neat, on the rocks, or enlivening your favorite cocktail. There’s a reason we call it “Classic.”

The nose is sweet with a hint of an herbal rye note but overall it is light and simple. The palate stays pretty sweet - almost like a sweetener is added - and the rye notes kick up especially in the back of the palate but it is a bit thin. The finish stays sweet with just the lightest of rye bites. With a small amount of water, the ethanol comes through while the sweet and rye notes move back some. The palate gets spicier, more cracked pepper and aggressive mint but still some sweetness surrounding all of that. This is a solid bourbon, but not amazing. We will be reviewing the Reserve release soon and are interested to see what they decide to do with all of the finishing that the Belle Meade line became known for! Cheers!!
